The ODD One Is Here Again!

    Dear Readers,

    Brother Odd cover

I continue to be delighted by the enduring resonance of the chord that has been struck in readers by my humble fry-cook hero, Odd Thomas. The flood of mail from readers regarding Oddie has buoyed me on many a down day.

The paperback of BROTHER ODD, the third novel in the series, arrives in stores on October 30. Odd has left his beloved small town, Pico Mundo, to stay as a visitor in a monastery high in the California sierra. He expects to find peace there, time to think and put his life back together. Peace doesn't follow Odd, however; evil and chaos follow him, and it is Odd's job to confront them, vanquish them, and create peace.

I'm currently completing the fourth book (ODD HOURS) in the series, in which Odd finds himself in a California beach town that is every bit as dangerous as it is picturesque. I'll tell you more about it in the months ahead. May all your Halloween dreams come true--or not, if they're dreams about Armageddon.

    AUTHOR Q & A

    Question:

What new book do you have coming out?

    Answer:

THE DARKEST EVENING OF THE YEAR arrives in stores November 27. It's a dog story, a suspense novel, a love story, and a comic novel about commitment, redemption, mercy, the wonder of the human-dog bond, the nature of identity, the mysterious order that underlies all examples of chaos, and the wisdom of having a Power-Pak II crematorium at your disposal at all times.

    Question:

Was there a specific "what if" moment that sparked DARKEST EVENING OF THE YEAR?

    Answer:

Books like THE HUSBAND and THE GOOD GUY start with a what-if, but not this one. An interest in volunteer groups that rescue abused and abandoned dogs, in particular golden retriever rescue, led me to the realization that this would be a good background for both a lead character and a novel: colorful, emotional, and fresh. I knew at once that it would also be a novel in which virtually all the characters had secrets that would detonate throughout the story and that it would be aboutthe strange patterns in life to which we often willfully blind ourselves. Don't ask me why I knew those two elements would be essential to the story; when writing, I travel on wheels of intuition.

When the Critic Strikes MIDNIGHT, Look Out!

    Midnight cover

After MIDNIGHT became the first of my novels to reach number one on the national bestseller lists, a critic in a prominent publication wrote that I was an overnight success and had been sold with "a massive and slick ad campaign" to a gullible public whose "lips move as they read his tedious novels about vampires in modern dress." MIDNIGHT isn't a vampire novel. Vampires do not appear in any of my novels. I have never written about a vampire in either modern or antique dress, nor in pajamas, for that matter. The vague and yet error-riddled details in the review made it clear that this man had not even skim-read the book. I killed him.

Black River Rewinds in Audio for First Time!

    Black River cover

Master of suspense Dean Koontz creates an undercurrent of terror in this story set deep in the dark and troubled town of Black River.

Burned-out Hollywood screenwriter Bo Aikens is fed up with life in Los Angeles. He heads out of the hustle and bustle of the big city and arrives in picturesque Black River in Northern California, seeking relaxation and artistic inspiration. In small, idyllic Black River, nearly everyone is happy, contented, and welcoming of strangers. But despite the beautiful setting, Bo begins to feel unsettled after several disturbing incidents. He discovers that all of his money has been transferred to a bank account in Black River, and a house has been purchased for him by someone on "his" instructions.

Troubled by various, peculiar twists of fate, Bo decides to leave Black River. As he becomes entangled in a nightmarish plot, preventing his return home, it suddenly seems clear to Bo that his perfect little hideaway captures more than just the imagination of its visitors.

Black River appeared in print in Mystery Scene Magazine #63 in 2000.
